5 Tested Hacks to a Truly Sustainable Lifestyle

Climate change and global warming have been affecting our lives more and more each day. They are the consequences of our own actions. It has become the need of the hour for us to start getting involved and actively giving back to the planet. The question now is – How can we as individuals contribute towards a positive impact to fight the climate crisis? The good news is that there are plenty of things we can do to be a part of this change, just by making a few changes in our lifestyle. We are talking about Sustainable Living. In this blog we are going to talk about a type of lifestyle that is convenient both for yourself and for the environment. It might sound arduous for now, but as you read this blog, you might realise that the shift to a sustainable lifestyle can be smooth-sailing and fun, with the right guidance. Let’s also be considerate to the fact that it is time we become wary of the choices we make in our day to day lives. Living a sustainable lifestyle is slowly becoming a necessity and not much of a choice, and you can start now, before it’s too late.

Here are the steps we can follow to build a sustainable lifestyle.

1.  Acknowledge the multiple facets of Sustainability

When it comes to inculcating eco-friendly habits in our lives, there are various sustainability-related areas that one can work towards. Some of these ways are:

  • Home Composting
  • Kitchen Gardening
  • Reusing plastic cans that come with your home supplies
  • Carrying cloth bags and reusable water bottles
  • Installing solar power for your home
  • Buying products with mindful packaging
  • Become a conscious and sustainable shopper
  • Supporting local vendors and local brands
  • Using zero-waste products

The above mentioned are only some of the many ways that exist out there, for living a sustainable lifestyle. If each of us adopts a few of these sustainable practices (if not all) in our lives, we will collectively have a significant impact on the long-term conservation of the planet. It is important to appreciate that Sustainable lifestyle has multiple dimensions. It is important to understand the wider gamut of sustainability actions, possible in typical daily life. A part of sustainable living, if not in its entirety can be followed by each one of us.

2. Begin with your favourite Sustainability area

If Sustainability is such a broad subject, where does one begin? After understanding and exploring several different types of sustainable actions, the ideal approach would be to pick the area that you found most interesting or relevant for your lifestyle. A lot of sustainability practitioners will tell you that once you begin exploring and conquering this area, you will gradually cultivate interest in other sustainable living areas too. Most sustainability practitioners will tell you that adopting eco-friendly habits into our lifestyles is not as difficult as we perceive it to be. Like most new habits, this too takes extra effort to stick to.

For instance, if you decide to choose home composting as your first activity, learn about it using online or offline tools. It is important to understand how to do it right from someone who has been there done that, so that you can avoid the struggles that they went through and have learnt from. Eventually, practicing and witnessing the results of your work will motivate you to continue with the habit.

3. Find your tipping point

As you keep practicing sustainability habits, somewhere along the journey will come a point when sustainability has been ingrained into every action you do. And that is what we call the tipping point. Beyond this point, you will observe that you do not have to be conscious about practicing sustainability; rather, it becomes second-nature because you have found your calling. You will have a natural inclination for continuing the sustainability habits and extend it to other areas without being prompted. Practicing and progressing it until the point where it becomes a liked habit should be the goal. Being consistent with your practices will also keep the results coming.

4. Stay motivated

When you are practicing sustainable living, always be sure of the fact that your efforts are helping the planet each day. Be informed about the new trends, products and activities that are taking place in leading a planet-friendly way of life. Motivating others to follow a lifestyle that is barred from environmentally harmful components is a crucial step taken towards a sustainable planet. Find ways to earn recognition for the efforts you are putting in, from people at home and with people in the larger community.

5. Find your herd

Surround yourself with like-minded people who are also trying to pursue a green and sustainable lifestyle. Sharing thoughts, communicating ideas, and even indulging in group activities that promote and exercise similar interests, would amplify the idea and the motivation to follow a sustainable lifestyle. Several NGOs, clubs, and informal groups often arrange meet-ups of individuals whose interests fall under a similar category. Enrolling in such groups can be a catalyst to your growing engagement towards sustainable living. Once you get a hang of a sustainable lifestyle, you can educate and inform others via social media, and influence and inspire hundreds of other people, thus expanding the Green Army.

By beginning your journey towards living a sustainable lifestyle, you are becoming a changemaker in the crisis that people from all walks of life are facing today. Charity begins at home, and if you adopt and become attuned to a sustainable lifestyle, you are making an unconscious positive change every single day. As more and more people will join hands to embrace sustainable lifestyles, our planet will shift back towards the green and healthy planet that we dream of.
